Where can I find Insurance for a Golf Cart licensed for road use?

Many small towns are passing laws that allow golf carts to be registered for road use.  However, many golf cart insurance companies will not insure a golf cart once it becomes registered for road use.  For some people, this has become quite frustrating.  Many people have had to cancel their golf cart insurance because the company would no longer insure it.

The good news is you can still get great coverage on golf cart insurance at a great rate.  You just need to look a little harder, or find an agent who has golf cart insurance companies that don’t have a problem with road use registration.  For those of you who live in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia or West Virginia, I will certainly be happy to help you with that.

Qualifications are fairly easy.

  • Your golf cart can’t be modified or souped up for extra speed, and goes 20 miles an hour or less.

  • Although it is obvious that you’ll be driving a golf cart and on some streets, these policies are intended only for occasional street use.  While you will still be covered if you have an accident on the street with your golf cart, keep in mind that this policy is not designed for everyday regular street use.  These policies are written with the understanding that it will still primarily only be used for off road use, and that you’ll only be using the golf cart on the streets occasionally.  If you plan on using your golf cart on the streets regularly, you’re better off finding an auto insurance company that will insure golf carts.

Other tips about golf cart insurance

  • Be careful of having golf cart insurance as an attachment to your homeowners insurance policy. While doing so is very easy and convenient, a golf cart insurance policy that's attached to a homeowners insurance policy doesn't usually offer the same coverage as an exclusive stand-alone golf insurance policy.

  • Golf cart insurance policies run much cheaper than your typical auto insurance policy. Don't make the mistake of skimping on coverage on the golf insurance policy because it may have been too expensive before on an auto insurance policy.

  • Don't be afraid to shop around! While it may be a little tougher finding golf cart insurance licensed for road use, that doesn't mean you can't get good coverage for a low rate.
