Michigan Motorcycle Insurance: Difference between Medical Benefits and Medical Payments

When getting an online motorcycle insurance quote in Michigan, you may be confused with the difference between medical benefits coverage and medical payments coverage. In any other state, only one or the other is offered. But in Michigan, both are offered. This article will explain the difference between medical benefits and medical payments coverage, and how the new no helmet law comes into play. There is only one difference between medical benefits and medical payments coverage: There is no time limit on medical benefits coverage. Medical payments coverage ceases 3 years from the date of the accident. That is the ONLY difference between the two coverages.
      There are some other things to keep in mind:

• Only medical benefits coverage satisfies the new no helmet law. Medical payments coverage does not. In order to satisfy the no helmet law, at least $20,000 of medical benefits coverage must be selected.
• Between the two coverages, you can choose either one or neither, but not both.
• Even though the 3 year time limit on medical payments coverage is only a very minor difference, you will be surprised to see that it makes a major difference in premium. Medical benefits coverage is much more costly than medical payments coverage.
• Medical benefits coverage is usually offered at much higher levels than is medical payments coverage. Most companies max out med pay at $25,000, but medical benefits coverage usually is offered in excess of 100K.
• Both coverages do not apply when a motorcycle collides with an automobile. That's because of a state law that says when a motorcycle collides with an automobile, the medical benefits coverage on the auto policy automatically covers both parties on an unlimited basis. Thus medical benefits and medical payments coverages only kick in when a motorcycle accident does not involve another motor vehicle, or when a motorcycle crashes with another motorcycle.
