How Do I File an Ohio SR22 Bond with the BMV?

The first step is to buy an auto insurance policy with an SR22 filing attached to it. In Ohio this can be done by any one of the following policies:
  • Regular Auto Insurance Policy - This I highly recommend if you own a vehicle, or have a vehicle registered in your name.
  •  If you Do Not own a vehicle, or have a vehicle registered in your name, you can have an SR22 filed on any of the following type of policies:
    • Financial Responsibility Bond
    • Broad Form Named Driver Policy
    • Named Operator Policy
All three types of policies are similar but have very key differences. Many companies only sell one or two types. Very few companies sell all three. So if you would like to discuss the differences, feel free to call me at 740-574-2618, and I will be happy to explain it to you. They each have their pros and cons but all of them will satisfy the SR22 filing requirement.

How does the SR22 filing process work?

If you're required to carry an Ohio SR22 filing, there are two ways to do so:
  • Easy Way: Simply Do Nothing! Once you purchase auto insurance with an SR22 filing attached, most if not all companies will automatically file the SR22 for you directly to the BMV. Depending on the insurance company and how busy the Ohio BMV is, this usually takes 1-2 business days.
  • Fast Way: One you purchase auto insurance with an SR22 filing attached, with most agencies, you can have the SR22 paperwork you need printed out in minutes. If you wish to take the paperwork to the BMV in person, they will process your SR22 on the spot. The downside to this is that many Ohio BMV locations have very long lines that people don't like to wait for. But relatively speaking, waiting in a long line is faster than waiting 1-2 business days.

What happens if I cancel an SR22 attached policy?

If any type of policy cancels or lapses, the insurance company is required to notify the Ohio BMV. Your license will then be suspended again until you are able to reinstate the policy, or put a new policy in force.

Which company has the best rates for an Ohio SR22?

There is no simple answer for this because so many factors go into it. The best way is to find an independent agent like myself who has several SR22 friendly companies. With each company you quote with, you have that one extra chance of getting a lower rate. An independent agent needs only to take your quote information once and do the shopping for you!

How much does Ohio SR22 insurance cost?

There are numerous factors that determine SR22 rates:
  • Your driving record & the reason you need the SR22 filing in the first place.
  • Your age, gender and marital status.
  • Location where you live.
  • Type of policy you have set up to satisfy the SR22. Your situation and the number of vehicles you own (if any) will determine the type of policy you need.

Which company has the cheapest SR22?

There is no single company that comes up the cheapest for everyone. Not even close! Each company has their own tastes, as far as what they like and don't like in terms of risk. So the best way of finding the lowest rate is to find an independent agent who carries several SR22 friendly companies and can shop for the best rates for you.

How long do I need to carry an SR22 in Ohio?

That also depends on several factors. But the majority of SR22 filings are required for 3 years (I've seen them go up to 5 years). To find out how long you need to carry an SR22, you can access the Ohio BMV online and get a free two-year drivers abstract, which will list when your SR22 requirement expires.

How do I file the SR22?

There are two ways, a fast way an and easy way:
  • Fast way: once you purchase auto insurance (or bond) with an SR22 attached, your agent should be able to email or fax you the paperwork. Take the paperwork personally to the BMV and they will process it on the spot. However, I use the word "fast" very loosely here! I am well aware of some of the long lines at certain BMV locations. Because of that, the "easy" is usually the most popular option.
  • Easy way: simply do nothing! The company will electronically file the SR22 to the BMV for you. It usually takes the BMV 1, sometimes 2 business days to process your SR22 this way.

Where can I get an online SR22 quote?

My agency offers online SR22 quotes. When you fill out one short quote form on one of the links below, I will run your quote with my companies, and find you the company with the best rate. And as always, I handle all quotes personally and privately.
