What's the difference between an Indiana SR50 and an SR22 auto insurance filing?

If you need an Indiana SR50 or an SR22 auto insurance state filing to reinstate your license, things can get confusing. You can find a lot of information online about SR22 state filings. But Indiana is the only state that has SR50 state filings. But what's the difference between the two? This article will help you understand what you need to know and how to get the best price for the right type of state filing and policy that you need to reinstate your license.

The best way to understand what SR50's and SR22's are and how they work is to first compare the similarities and differences:

Similarities between the Indiana SR50 and SR22 state filings:

  • Both the SR50 and the SR22 filings are primarily for drivers who have had their license suspended, but are about to get their license reinstated. Acquiring one of these filings is usually the last step in that process.

  • Neither filing offers any type of auto insurance within itself. Which means that you can't just go buy an SR50 or an SR22 filing by itself. These filings attach on to some type of auto insurance policy.

  • Both filings show the Indiana BMV that you have purchased at least the state minimum auto insurance liability coverage that state law requires.

Differences between the SR50 and the SR22 State filings:

  •  An SR50 state filing applies to the present, meaning that it's a guarantee to the BMV that you're carrying at least state minimum auto liability insurance at the present time. Once someone files an SR50, they are finished with the process (because an SR50 only pertains to the present).

  • An SR22 state filing applies to both the present and the future. If you cancel or lapse on an auto insurance policy that has an SR22 attached to it, the insurance company is required by law to notify the Indiana BMV. Once that happens your license gets suspended again until you file another SR22.

Substituting an SR22 for an SR50 filing:

Most auto insurance companies only offer the SR22 filing. For those who need the SR50 filing, you can substitute it for the SR22. So don't worry if you need an SR50 and only the SR22 is offered. You will be fine with the SR22. Also, you are not held to the higher standard that the SR22 carries. If you only shop around with companies that offer the SR50, you will severely limit yourself to companies that may not offer as low of a rate.

For those who need an SR22, you can NOT substitute! If you need to have the SR22, then you must get an SR22. An SR50 filing will not work as a substitute for an SR22 filing.

Attaching the SR50/SR22 filing onto the right type of auto insurance policy: This one is very simple....

  • For those who own vehicles, or have vehicles registered in their name, you should attach the SR50/SR22 filing onto a regular auto insurance policy.

  • For those who do not own a vehicle, you can still reinstate your license by attaching the SR50/SR22 to what is called a Named Operator Policy (aka non-owners policy).

Getting the right auto insurance policy for the right price

Now that you understand the right type of policy to buy, and understand how the SR22/SR50 filings work, it's time to shop around. The best chance for you to find the lowest rate possible for the type of policy and filing that you need is to get quotes from an independent auto insurance agent. Some independent agents carry companies that specialize in this type of insurance. With an independent agent, they will do the shopping around for you, and find the company with the lowest rate.

Summary:

This is just a quick and simple breakdown of the differences between an SR22 and an SR50 filing. If you would like more information, check out the related article at the bottom, in which I get into more detail about the differences between the two. I also get into other types of Indiana state filings that are more uncommon.
