Buying FR44 Insurance in Virginia: Getting the Right Policy for the Lowest Price

​In Virginia, many drivers who need to reinstate their license are required to buy an FR44 auto insurance filing. There's quite a bit of confusion about how an FR44 filing works. Part of the confusion stems from the fact that there's not much information about FR44's out there like there is for other types of filings. That's because Virginia is one of only two states that have FR44's. This article is about how Virginia drivers can get the right type of FR44 auto insurance policy they need at the lowest price.


What is FR44 Insurance?

•      An FR44 is not auto insurance itself. It is a state filing that attaches onto an auto insurance policy. It is a guarantee to the state DMV that you're carrying at least double the state minimum liability auto insurance requirement.

   

• Think of it as a tattletale filing. In other words, if you ever cancel an auto policy that has an FR44 attached to it, the auto insurance company is required by law to notify the Virginia DMV. Once that happens, your license will be suspended again until you either reinstate your lapsed FR44 or buy a new auto insurance policy with an FR44 attached to it.

How do I set up an FR44 auto insurance policy?


      There are two types of auto insurance policies in Virginia that a driver can use to attach an FR44 filing onto: 

• Anyone who owns a vehicle, has a vehicle registered in their name, or drives a vehicle owned by one of their household members needs to buy a regular auto insurance policy.

• Anyone who does not own a vehicle or have a vehicle registered in their name and doesn't drive a household members car, they need to take out what's known as a named operator auto insurance policy (a.k.a. non-owners policy).

• An FR44 filing simply attaches onto either one of the above two types of policies. Once you buy one of these policies with an FR44 attached to it, the auto insurance company lets the DMV know that you now are carrying at least double the state minimum auto liability limits.

Can I buy an FR44 filing to cover me driving a motorcycle?


Yes you can. However motorcycles are not covered on any type of auto insurance policy. What you will need to do is find a motorcycle insurance company that does indeed write these FR44 filings onto them.




Where's the best place to buy FR44 auto insurance for the lowest price?


      Your best bet is to find an independent auto insurance agent who carries several companies that specialize in high-risk auto insurance. Most any of them can help you. It's really important for you to shop around and get quotes with multiple companies. That is the only way you're going to be able to get the best rate. The advantage of going through an independent agent is that you only have to give your information once, and the agent can run your quote for you through multiple companies versus going to each company and getting a quote one at a time, which can be very tedious.


How long do I have to carry an FR44 filing?


    This answer varies depending on the circumstances. However, the FR44 requirement period usually lasts either 3 years or 4 years, depending on whether you drive with a restricted license. It is very important that you be aware of the expiration date of when this requirement ends.... Cancel too soon, and your license will be suspended... cancel too late, and you may be needlessly paying a surcharge on your auto insurance. If you do not know your expiration date, you will need to find out by contacting the Virginia DMV. Because of privacy laws, your insurance agent/company have no way of knowing the expiration date of an FR44 requirement. So make SURE you stay on top of it.
