Buying an Indiana Named Operator Auto Insurance Policy Online: Key Points & FAQ's

A named operator policy is a way for drivers who do not own vehicles to have at least state minimum liability auto insurance coverage. It also works for drivers who are trying to get their drivers license back, and need either an SR22 or an SR50 state filing. A Named Operator's policy (AKA Non-owners policy) can be purchased online fairly easily if you search in the right places. But before you buy a named operator auto insurance policy online, you need to be aware of what it does and doesn't cover. This article will explain what you need to know, so you won't have any unpleasant surprises later on.

What a Named Operator Policy Covers:

  • A named operator policy gives the driver liability auto insurance coverage on any vehicle they borrow (as long as the vehicle doesn't belong to someone in their household).

  • A named operator policy can easily attach an SR22 or SR50 filing to itself for drivers who need them. Once you buy a named operator policy with either an SR22 or SR50 attached to it, the auto insurance company will file it electronically with the Indiana BMV.

  • A named operator policy acts as a secondary policy. To illustrate how secondary coverage works, let's assume that you borrow your neighbors car, and cause an accident. Your neighbor's regular auto insurance policy would be the primary coverage, and thus cover the accident..... However, if your neighbor isn't carrying the required auto insurance that they should be carrying, this named operator policy will kick in as secondary coverage, and pay for a liability claim up to the limits on the policy. It will also kick in if your neighbor had liability insurance, but not enough to cover all the damages you caused.... Think of it as a "CYA", covers your ass policy in case the owner of the vehicle doesn't have or doesn't have enough liability coverage.

  • All named operator policies offer at least state minimum liability coverage (which in Indiana is only 25/50/10). But most named operator policies will offer higher limits than that (which I highly recommend). Most policies will also offer coverage for uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage, as well as medical payments coverage.

What a Named Operator policy does NOT cover:

  • Driving vehicles that you own. If you own a vehicle, or have a vehicle registered in your name, this policy is NOT for you! *** The only exception to this would be if you have a regular auto insurance policy covering your vehicle, and are using this named operator policy for another purpose (such as satisfying an SR22/SR50 requirement).

  • Driving vehicles owned by someone else in your household.

  • Driving vehicles being used for business/commercial puposes.

  • There is no coverage whatsoever on the vehicle you're driving/borrowing. This is known as comprehensive and collision coverage on a regular auto policy. No such coverage exists on a named operator policy. The only vehicle a named operator policy would cover is the other guy's vehicle, if you were to cause an accident.

FAQ's

I need an SR22 / SR50 filing but my current auto insurance company doesn't handle them. Can I keep my current policy active, and buy a named operator policy just for my SR22 or SR50 requirement?

Yes. Although it is normally cheaper just to combine them into one policy with a company that does handle state filings. there are exceptions to where carrying two separate policies is a better idea. This is especially true for homeowners who have their auto policy bundled with their homeowners policy.... Since a named operator policy is much cheaper than a regular auto insurance policy, sometimes it comes out better.

I don't own a car now, but plan to buy one very soon. How will this affect my policy?

When this happens, you simply need to call your agent, and add a vehicle to the policy.... This automatically converts a named operator's policy into a regular auto insurance policy. It only takes a five minute phone call to change it. But be sure to do that before you drive the new vehicle, because coverage won't apply until you call and change it.

What's the best way to buy a named operator's policy online?

The best way is to contact an independent agent that has multiple companies to quote you with. This way, one quote request can get you multiple quotes at once. This is a lot more efficient than getting a quote with one company at a time.
